What Exactly ARE Sugar Alcohols?

When you are on a low carb diet, there are a lot of things that you have to look out for when buying different kinds of products. Sugar alcohols are one the top things you have to be aware of when buying certain types of foods. These are very misleading to some.

Sugar alcohols come from the fact that they mimic sugar and alcohol so well, but they are actually very low in calories compared to sugar. A few types of sugar alcohols that you might see on some nutritional facts labels are; Erythritol, Isomalt, Maltitol, Hydrogenated starch hydrolysates, Sorbitol, Xylitol, and Mannitol. Your safest bet for this is to keep this in mind; If you cannot pronounce it, chances are it is not good for you. The most common places you find these sugar alcohols are not in what you expect. You can actually find them normal everyday things like cough drops, breath mints, toothpastes, and even cough syrups.
