How low carb diets work

It is a wonder for most people how low carbohydrate diets work. Why is that proponents of low carb diets claim that you can lose weight just by decreasing your carbohydrate intake and maintaining your current protein and fat intake?


The principle behind low carb diets is that depriving the body of carbohydrates to burn will result to the burning of fats instead. In metabolism, the carbohydrates are the first ones to be converted into energy. If there is not enough carbs, the body will burn fats instead. Again, if there is a lack of fats, the protein is the last to be converted into energy. So if we eat just a little amount of carbohydrates, the body will use the stored fats as an energy source. Chemicals known as ketones will be produced as a by-product of fat metabolism.


However, like all other diet programs, low carb diets are not as easy as they sound. In fact, they can cause rebound weight gain as a result of difficulty adhering to the diet plan. So if you’re planning to go into a low carb diet, make sure that you are really up for it, both physically and mentally.
